My music memories pt VII

Never Ending Story! One of the best story ever written and produced, I'm very lucky that I grew up in 80's and exposed to good quality music.

This song takes me way back before I realized what kind of life I would choose...oh, how I miss those times

ps: thanks to Cherryloveph for sharing!

Nothing much, daily routine...

almost a month since my last post...yeah yeah, many things happened.

The first reason I haven't posted anything is I'm quite bored and don't feel like writing.

another reason is, I'm getting occupied with several things at the same time, my studio, planning demo materials for school to school promotion of music lessons at my studio, my wife, my band (we're still looking for keyman), gigs for my band, preparing for a show and saving new incomes to replace my broken iBook battery.

Life goes on....

The beginning of the end for Indonesia music industry?

A friend of mine forwarded me an interesting email from FORMUSIK_INDONESIA on Yahoo groups. I feel like sharing it here...
The email was written in Indonesian and I've translated it so every non Indonesian would know what is happening. Also please take note that the topic is about Indonesian music industry and TV stations.

The email was written by, known only by his user name, Mr Blend Rock.

Did you know that record labels are sharing the revenue from RBTs to TV Stations as they put the Template on their artists' Video Clips?
(...you knew this for sure...)

Did you know that sometime ago all major record labels has been called to see one of the TV Stations director just because their payments to the particular TV station were IDR 2 million less? (about US$ 200)
The deal is, record labels can put the RBT Template on the video clips of their artists when it is broadcasted but they have to share their RBT income to the TV stations. According to Rolling Stone indonesia, the RBT income of one particular major record labels is IDR 40 billion per year (approx. US$ 4 million).

Did you know that TV stations in Indonesia are competing viciously one another for music show? (Surely this is no more a secret)

Did you know that a band, that once had platinum, was denied-while on the way-to appear in a TV show on a particular TV station? Why?
Because on the same day, half an hour before, the band just performed on the same type of show on a competitor TV station. Wow?

Did you know? That TV stations are selling their slots for music show in huge nominal to advertising agencies. Reasoned they must pay a considerable expensive fee for the music artists appearing on their show? (The information is provided by one of the advertising seniors who have worked in the field since 1992)
It's so irony and contrast with the payment received by musicians/artists when they're asked to appear on TV stations.

Did you know? That No.1 Rating for TV stations that currently held by a particular private Indonesian TV stations, one of the main reasons is, its music program had a big impact in increasing the rating.

Did you know that either that TV stations, record labels, artist managers and musicians/artists are in fact in need one another?
But why in reality the musicians and their managers, ever since the beginning of music show in Indonesian TV stations, are never considered as working partners? (Only God knows why...)

Just cruisin' life....watching...

The last couple if weeks has been interesting...

On November 4th, 2008 a history has been made, Barack Obama bacame the first black president of the United States. I thank Jesus that I live to see something that most people think as impossible, some even did not live to see this pinnacle event of history. Mr. Obama, congratulations!

A week later, some thousand kilometers from USA, in a place called Speak Friend And Enter studio in Jakarta...I met again with the keyman candidate for my band and we rehearsed some of the songs. Too bad my vocalist and bassist couldn't come due to health problem.

I hope this month would be a good time for us all...looking forward to see Academie of FarSide Mark X and Barack Obama in White House.

The life of Academie of FarSide

Yesterday my band rehearsed and met with a potential keyboard player for the band. All went very well and it was decided that next week he will come to rehearsal and try to fit into the music.
My expectations? Just normal...if he could perform with us, praise the Lord! But if not, I believe Jesus will send us the right person.

Other than the things I mentioned above, a mind just crossed my mind. Academie of FarSide, an excellent music group that I formed back in late 2003, has experienced personnel changes more than I can remember and I feel like writing all the formations the band ever had before.
So, here we go (I'm not going to put the dates yet):

A day after Indosiar...Academie of FarSide awakens

Happy Sunday!

Aah...a new day after my performance with Jever last night (Oct 18, 2008). We had many things happening at once and I personally think that last night wasn't comfortable. The performance also wasn't the best we've ever done in TV...perhaps we just tired of playing the same song? I don't know...It was good but certainly not the best.

Today...my band, Academie of FarSide experiencing its awakening moment...although we haven't got a keyboard player yet, the new personnel rehearsed nicely and really brought new colors to AOFS' music, I could tell the new line up will become much more nasty than the previous one.
Their spirits has lighten me up and gave new strength for me to move on and working for the 3rd studio album. Thank you Lord for everything!

Indosiar revisited (appearing with Jever)

Tonight I will accompany Jever and appear on TV (Indosiar) again. The show is "Gebyar BCA" at 9 pm local time.
We're still going to perform the same song, a cover version of "Kisah Cintaku" by the late Chrisye.

Meanwhile as I wait for departing to Indosiar, I'll continue my research about, world's cultures and music.

my pragmatic thoughts

Since I returned to Jakarta and started to work seriously in music in 2003...I've met with all kinds of people and musicians. Some of the people are nice some are just don't. So too with the musicians...just a little of them are nice and mostly just simply plain ass holes.

Most of the ass holes unfortunately are the ones that I needed the most for my band, keyboardists!
Yes, so hard for me and my co-workers finding good attitude keyboardist, that I'm beginning to think of making a black list of Jakarta keyboardists.
Not that I want to open a war, not at all. It's just that I felt lately we saw and found many young musicians, caught up in the influence of these ass holes keyboardists, so that we need a guideline for young musician, that can keep them from becoming a victim.

I'm not yet to start writing down the black list...well, it's just a concerning thought, I'll probably going to write it soon enough....

My music memories pt VI

METALLICA!!! Yeah! This is one of the most important bands in the world and they also gave a huge impact on my life. Listening to their music when I was just a kid, making me a hard core in pursuing music career as the purpose of my life.
More over, their old bass player, Cliff Burton was my first music hero and even until now.

I remember during my years on elementary school, I was the only kid who listening to Metallica and saying around that I want to become a musician. Thank you Cliff, thank you Metallica for the music.

My MacBook Pro, about...

Last Thursday I found that my MacBook Pro (MBP) battery isn't functioning normally and I quickly went to Apple Store to check it out.
Turned out that my battery is no more functioning and I had the replace it with a new one. Luckily enough, I paid the new battery just before rupiah (indonesian currency, IDR) value towards US dollar plunged.

Yesterday I received the new battery and I'm currently still (according to the manuals) calibrating it.

Will there any hope for Indonesian football?

I took this from the headline of Kompas daily of today, October 10, 2008.
The incident took place on Thursday at the Indonesia's super league during the match between PSIS Semarang and PSMS Medan.
The manager of PSIS Semarang apparently not satisfied with the referee's decisions during the match.

IF he understood the fair-play concept he would've report the game to a committee after the match. BUT NOOOOO!!! He straightaway jumped from the bench, chasing down the referee and run amok, trying to smack the referee. It's lucky he didn't whack one of his own players.
To make matter worst, he didn't express any sorry for his act, instead he was insisting that his action was justified caused by the referee. If he couldn't control his own ego, how would he be an example for his players?

This only one of many many idiotic things that ruin the Indonesian football. What a shame.

Pure hate towards facebook

yesterday the muslim celebrated Eid ul-Fitr or also known as Idul Fitri in Indonesia, I hope those who celebrates the holy day really understand what they were celebrating of.

Anyways...for the last couple days, I've made a profile for my band, Academie of FarSide on facebook and tried to modify the profile like crazy. But after so far, I'm not even close to what I wanted.
First, facebook won't allow you to create a collective profile, so I had to make a profile. Afterwards, we can't change the profile into collective one, instead you'll have to make a group and later on I was trapped to make yet another profile for Academie of FarSide.
It's so troublesome and so unfriendly. Every time you're making new group or band profile, you'll need to do edit and upload again. It's so frustrating!

I actually won't hate it so much but since some of my friends and people really insisted me to create a facebook profile, so when I found that facebook is just nothing but another internet crap, my frustration grew into pure hate.
So yes...I HATE FACEBOOK!

With this situation, I will only use facebook for my band purposes, no more, no less. Go on, if you want to add Academie of FarSide on facebook.

My music memories pt V

The first time I heard Genesis I was 6, in my big brother's room and he was playing this song on a tape player. Strangely I didn't really like their music at first, but as I got older, I came to like their music. Genesis is a unique band, they are successful in whatever music they chose to carry.

My music memories pt IV

Heeeeeyyyy...I want to share my another music influence, Jethro Tull!
This song is also one of my favorites and tickled my music sense back in my childhood times.

They also one of the greatest band ever existed and I'm so blessed that God allowed me to watch 'em live at KL, malaysia back in 2001.

ps: Thanks to BY119ROCK for sharing the video.

My music memories pt III

Again...I was browsing randomly and found an old video clip of Nina Hagen from the year 1982. My influence? I'm not quite sure, since I was still 3 by the time the album released...but I think I've heard of her music afterwards in my youth. By that time I didn't realize who the musician was and though her music craved its way in my music soul, I completely forgot about her much later.

Sometime in 2006, my mentor gave me an old tape of Nina Hagen. At first I thought I never knew her music, but after listening the album I remember her and realized that subconsciously her music also influenced my music.

September 11, 2008

It's been 7 years since the tragedy that shock the world, known as 9/11 tragedy...

My heart is praying for the victims and everyone who got affected by the tragedy. God bless us all.

My music memories pt II

This is another video of a band that also heavily influenced my music. Rush is a great band and they composed great music too.

I remember listening to their music when I was in junior high and all of my friends thought that I'm a freak for listening to, as they perceived, a broken tape.

days after gig on RCTI

Three days now after our gig at "Dahsyat" a show on RCTI and it has been something to us, three tv interviews, Jever's online mp3 selling also shows a steep increase. Needless to say the aftermath is positive.

It's 12.35 pm and another reporter from a magazine is on their way to my studio for an interview...we gotta change....

en route to Kebun Jeruk

Today is Jever's performance on RCTI and since we need to be there at 8 pm, we all woke up very early to prepare the day. After waking up, I noticed that last night Jakarta have been showered by heavy rain.

My wife and I woke up around 4.30 am, we went straight to take a bath and preparing things I need for the performance. I've listed some of the equipments needed and some of them are already on my car, so I have time to write something here.

It's 5.30 am and I need to take my milk...

...I finished up my milk already and have arranged stuff in my car. It's now 6.10 am, we should've been ready by now but as usual, everybody's taking their time too loose. Our schedule is to go at 6.30, but judging by the situation now, I don't think we'll go by schedule...well, that's just how things are...

Wildstix cruising life

So the new month arrives, last month was interesting with 2 TV shows and 1 video clip shooting. It was simply cool!

All I can say for the two TV stations, Indosiar and RCTI, is that their professionalism is totally different. While Indosiar only received third best rating in Indonesia, but their staff are pros and never underestimate people. RCTI is holding the highest rating in Indonesia and it has made the staff arrogant. Although the stage people are nice, but the rest are just cocky and deceiving.

This month also the start of Ramadhan, where the muslims must fast from dawn to sunset for a month. While it's part of their belief, but in Indonesia Ramadhan in some way has lost its meaning. It has become more of economy shaker and always causing the prices to rise higher without ever returning to normal. People are seeing the phenomena as normal, but for sane people, it's never normal! Too many people now using Ramadhan as an excuse to get more profit and no one ever stand and fight it.

My next appearance

This August 30, 2008 I will appear as Jever's drummer again on TV. This time on RCTI, a leading private-owned national TV in Indonesia. The show time is 10.30 pm

ad jever RCTI

If you're living in Indonesia, don't miss it!

For those living outside Indonesia, I'll upload the video for you all to watch :)

Appearing on a video clip

I'm also appearing on Jever's latest video clip. Enjoy!!

My first performance on TV

Like I said on my earlier post, this is the video from my performance with my friend, Jever on a TV show, august 13, 2008. Here it is then....(by the way, I'm on drums)

My first ever TV performance!!!

YEEHHHAAAAA!!!!

I'm so happy that my first appearance on national TV (Indosiar), last August 13, went so smooth. I appeared as the drummer for my friend, Jever and over all our performance was flawlessly awesome!

Above is the pic taken while we are waiting at the artist room just before our performance. From left - right: Mr. Ang (eVo), Jever, William (bass), Masha and Pasha (twin child of the local music legend, Chrisye) and me.

Seriously, it was fantastic and I don't even have the right words to tell it here. But as soon as I got the "on action" pictures from Indosiar, I'll post them here so you will be able to feel how it was like.

Thank you Jesus, for guiding my career!

Wildstix in half a week

Woke up early this sunday morning...my body still felt heavy since my energy is drained for the rehearsals in friday and saturday but I got up and went to my studio. There supposed to be a recording schedule at 10 am and I still need to set up something for it. But let's read my life in last week.

The start of the week there was nothing special, we continue our work to promote Jever and so on. One good news came to us on Thursday that according to IMport (the digital music provider in Indonesia), Jever's song got to the top of the download chart! The quantity wasn't much but the point is, with minimal budget and promotion, Jever's song could surpassed 3 Diva's, a well funded famous female trio. For us, the production team, though it's not over yet it is a sweet victory over the difficulties and obstacles we had during the start of this work.

Next day, Friday, I had rehearsal with Jever and the band for our upcoming appearance in Indosiar on next Wednesday. The rehearsal was much more better than the previous one but we started very late, plus our bass player had to leave not long after we start for emergency reason. So we continued without him and surprisingly turned out very satisfying.
On Saturday, again the rehearsal started late because my friend, the producer, had to go to his doctor. But after he came, the rehearsal started smoothly and we also had the chance to do some intermezzo by playing some other songs. It was fun!
The rehearsal ended around 6 pm and gosh...I felt so tired but happy. After everyone went home, my wife and I were still in my studio, cleaning up and setting the wires for recording on Sunday morning. At 12, I left the studio and went straight to sleep.

Sunday, 7 am, I got up and get done with everything else left unfinished the other night. I checked the clock and only 15 minutes left to 10 am. So I just wait, wait and wait, wait again until it was almost 11 am!
Uh well, I guess they just canceled the schedule without even bother telling me. Hahaha...typical indonesian and also negative eastern culture. To think about it, I've even wasted my cell credits to tell them exactly where to look for my studio...sigh...
Having nothing to do, I returned to my room and continued my sleep and woke up around 1 pm, having my lunch and dessert, then wrote this blog....

On course to fame

These past few days has been interesting, but only if you can get over the stresses.

My job interview was terrible since there was an audition too and I didn't really expect that, if it was an exam, I'd failed right away. But after thinking about the whole thing, maybe I shouldn't get the job since I also have one important work before me, that is helping my best friend, Jever rise to existence in national music industry (in other word, FAME!!!). God sure works in a mysterious way.

Getting over the failure of the interview, I now shifted most of my energy and thoughts to Jever's project. I need to do so, as we have a schedule to appear and perform on one national TV, Indosiar this August 13, 2008. I will appear too as the drummer...it'll be my first time appearing on TV, yeah!
We also have schedules for on and off air performance soon, so I'm sure we'll have more things to work on.

Academie of FarSide? Oh my band....yeah, I look for new vocalist and so far no luck (as usual). It'll be sometime before I find the right person, so AOFS will just have to be patient and wait.

Wildstix, about...

I still have this mixed feeling, 6 days after I pulled my band out from sinking. It's hard to forget the people who have been working with you for sometime and it's even harder to forget the sadness of seeing them gradually defunct.
But new days are ahead of my band and I, so this excitement of new experience really fueled me up to look for new formation and personnel. Thankfully my wife and our closest friends really really help me out dealing with it and provided encouragement for times like these.

All of the emotions rushed in me at almost the same time and I felt kind of numb. But I need to get over it quick to face tomorrow.

Other things in recent days...

My youngest niece will be baptized on august 3, 2008. My wife and I are planning to attend the service but suddenly I got text that said I'll be having job interview for part time music teacher on the same date! Imagine that, a job interview on Sunday!
As much as I want to go to my niece's baptize, I also need the job...I'll just see how are things later.

The other interesting thing recently is, I'll be featured in my best friend's video clip. Though I've been a performer for some years, it will be my first experience doing that kind of thing. Judging from the people involved in the production, I'm sure it'll be fun!

Academie of FarSide's new life

July 24, 2008. It’s finally done; I cancelled our gig and I’ve fired my band mates, setting them free to live their own lives. But even so they’re still persisting that they’ve done nothing wrong and as usual, put the blame on me again.
Even it was painful to my heart, I tried one last time to make them think as adults and it was very heartbreaking that they were still unable to reach maturity of their mind. Thus I decided that Academie of FarSide couldn’t move one with spoiled children on the wheel.

To save the band, that my wife and I dear most, I took a painful decision to fire all my band mates. I told them the most important reasons, might as well the facts too, that there is no focus anymore, no improvement and no consistency.
Being fired (or cut off) for the first time in their life, the ego started to kick in. I appreciate my vocalist for being fair at some points but I just laughed at others for firing out blank bullets at the facts. But what else can I do? They’re just kids.

With three brats gone, Academie of FarSide is now looking forward for its bright future. I don’t know how it’s going to be, since I’m still looking for new personnel, but I’m very sure the band will rise as one of the prominent prog bands in the world.

The Great Journey has begun!

July 19, 2008 will be remembered as the start of a great journey of my newly formed band. I thought of it as a great journey because each member (including me) are all the people who dedicated their lives to music and has experienced much pain because our love of music.
The formation is a trio, my best friend plays guitar, guitar synth and synthesizers, my new best friend fill the vocal with his unique and powerful voice and myself, playing drumkit and synthesizers. From our first jamming, power trio will not fit to call this group.

As for the trio's name, we still have yet to choose from several potential names, but whatever name we decided to use, I will love it because my long hoped wish came true.
Still more to come and long way ahead of us, but we're gonna kick some ass along the way! Ready or not, my trio will come right in your face!

As for my own band, Academie of FarSide, it's clear that all hope are lost with current personnel. I would dispose them but we're gonna have two gigs in August and the time is too short to find replacements or additionals. I just need to be more patient until the end of August and then I will make any necessary actions to save Academie of FarSide, one of which is to fire all my band mates!

Something about Japanese music...

Well, I got this bugging my mind…

We all know about j-rock or j-pop or whatever they or we call it and though I’m not a fan to the genre but I did notice something out.

I’ve listen to every kind of music since I was little and that also includes Japanese contemporary music (in this case J-rock & J-pop). The booming of anime industry has made the genre gaining more attention and fans; in turn the J-music industry blooms as well.

One thing that I learned this far, after listening to cheesy but legendary theme song of Lionmaru to the theme songs of the latest Japanese movie or anime (and some of the latest Japanese mainstream music artists), is the vocal characteristic whether female or male, rock or ballad, IS ALWAYS THE SAME!!!

I found this because my wife and my oldest niece are big fans of anime and they continuously watch it. Sometimes I was around and at first I enjoyed the music, but after a while I got fed up. I don't even want to hear the sound from the movies.
I then tried to find out the thing that makes me so fed up with this particular Japanese product and found it.

If you don't believe me, try take sometime to listen to the Japanese mainstream artists. I'm sure you'll find the same freaky thing as I did.

A little note to the anime...I grew up with anime and other Japanese life action movies. Back then the stories are deep and interesting. Nowadays anime doesn't have that and the writers are now busy to make twist after twist after twist. In the end the stories are damn boring and to remedy that they inserted one or two jokes in some important scenes. Aawww, c'mon guys, you're better than that!

where's the anime that I once knew???

Map with dig through the Earth

I was working on my google map when I realize they also have one cool application, called Dig a hole through the Earth. so I added it to my map and tried it out.

It's interesting to see where we would came out should I dig through the Earth from my front yard. The app showed that we will came out in the middle of nowhere in COLOMBIA!!!
To be precise, we will came out at the mountains near the city or village Chalara (approximately 3.2 miles). Also the nearest highway is 64.
At least now I know that I should consult to my cousin who is an experienced climber if I want to dig through Earth and pops out at some Colombian mountains.

My regards to the people of Chalara!!!

Meddling with google maps

I'm just starting to create my map at google maps...since I'm a newbie in this kinda thing, there isn't much about my map but I keep working on it.
It's a map of Jakarta, the city I live in. So far I've added the description of my home, studio and ohoooo...the house of people representatives also known in Indonesia as DPR building. I'm yet to create paths and other things.

Electricity crisis

Aaaahh yes...living in Indonesia has its own advantages, chaotic traffic, snob-minded society and if you're lucky enough, you could watch on TV a corruptor is being dragged like a 5 year old kid by the authorities to a car to be apprehended. It's hilarious.

But the best thing in Indonesia is, the electricity crisis at the capital city, Jakarta! Several days ago we learned from the media that from July 11 to July 25, 2008 there will be a partial shutdown to all region of Jakarta because the electric generators are unable to maintain the output. It has got to do with the neat and excellent job of the electric company, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), yup no doubt about it!

Meanwhile, my friend, Jever has finally released his first single, an adaptation to the late Chrisye's famous piece, Kisah Cintaku. The single can be bought through importmusik.com or go straight to his import page www.importmusik.com/artist.php?aka=0220000541

I recorded and did balancing to his songs, so I'm proud about the release.

For my band...I've resolved to option that should my band mates fail to prove their further interest, after August 1, 2008 Academie of FarSide will go through another transformation.

but before that....THE OUTAGE!!!!!

Snobs, forgive them

I subscribed to one of the largest online Indonesia music community/forum and I've posted there for three years with no problem. But lately I got using more and more of the F word. Though I used them to comment on the subject matters, some people really get pissed of me as if I was directing the F word at them.

For an example, one guy, who's post got my pretty harsh comment, replied that I shouldn't underestimate him because of his opinion and no need of being so excessive. This guy clearly didn't understand since I tried to wake them up from being so naive.
If I must tell you...this guy post a reply that suggest the best drum setup for the rehearsal studio and performance for a minimal budget. He suggested to get the starter type of Sabian cymbals and Tama drumkit, then he continued with "TAMA + SABIAN = mike portnoy" (this is the reason for my F word). It was clear that his suggestion very misleading. Again, I'm not underestimating anyone, but this guy must learn some more before he could give a good and appropriate suggestion without being easily offended by a mere F word.

Well, that was just another day for me in an online Indonesia music community/forum.

Another annoying thing

A couple days ago I went to look for a keyboard controller to be new addition to my drumkit setup. I was sure to get the Oxygen 8 from M-Audio because of the company's high reputation in the field. So I was looking hi and lo for it, from one store I found out that M-Audio sole distributor in Indonesia is now held by Mila Music. Before going to the store I've done a survey about the price and found that the price shouldn't be higher than IDR 1,3 million.

I was shocked to know that Mila Music is putting the price higher than expected, IDR 1,4 million and if I rate it to US$ it will be like $150 something! The original Oxygen 8 price from M-Audio is $149.95, so if I agreed with Mila Music's price, I'll be screwed! I tried to reason about the price but they always said it was an exhibition price (cheap) and when I countered the statement they just implicitly told me that they are the only distributor and if I don't like the price I can go fuck off. I tried to except it and to understand the situation economically, so I asked to see the item and have it tested. It turned out they haven't put Oxygen 8 in their import list so it is not exist yet in Indonesia! What a service, great job Mila Music!!!

While the price was one thing, the guy of the store who talked with me was another. I was protested softly about the price and mentioned that I've seen other lower prices for Oxygen 8 then the guy snapped at me and arrogantly proclaimed that there are no other place that sell M-Audio other than Mila Music. I was pissed, but I knew it would be a waste to be pissed at someone like that, so I just walked out of the store. Promising myself I wouldn't go and buy from that arrogant, cocky store.

I think M-Audio should review their distributor in Indonesia and get another one that is more friendly, humble and most of all, not giving ripped off prices!

Rock on!!!

It's 4th of July and happy independence day to american people! God bless you!

aaaannd.......

My wife and I have just finished doing all the things for the jazz workshop I told in the earlier post. Thank God everything went well and despite of one or two quite fatal mistakes we made, our persistence in keeping everything on track has given us respect from the people we worked with, except our partner who seemingly each time drifting away from a respectful manner. Time to straight up everything, I promise that!

It's been a while since I had a smile on my face when talking about music. My band has been an excruciating pain in the ass, my partner (who is a music prof) is confusing me about how well know he is in the music scene and what or who is best in music.
The other well educated people that I knew also getting me the headache since every time they talk, no matter what the subject was, always leading back to another questions. I'm sick and tired of it! What I need is music and other things just as they are.

But now I'm in a good spirit because my long time dream will soon come to life. It's all coming together and it will start with a BANG!

What'll happen to my old band? Nobody knows...if my band mates are willing to work and expand their musicality then I could keep it alive, but if not...hey I got my own life and music dreams, just gotta cut the rope and move on.

I got a message for all the MDs of radios around Jakarta, Bogor and Bandung...how really nice people you all!

Tiring weeks

The last two weeks has been very tiring for both me and my wife. We were in the middle of arranging a jazz workshop for June when we both got sick and hospitalized. It took us the total of three weeks to fully recovers and during the time we didn't have the strength to contact the people with whom we worked with.

Days passed and finally we are fully recovered. We straightaway continued our work and contacted everyone in this project but only to found that everyone turns up on blaming us for not doing our job seriously. The venue for the workshop and the gig were unjustly cancelled and again everyone put the blame on us. I took all the blame and thank Jesus I was strong enough. Some of my friends who knew about this told me to tell the truth, but I don't think that'll work since empathy does not exist in the kind of people who knew too much.

Later on we got the plan modified and the workshop is still running as scheduled. But then again, I don't feel like doing this at all!
Besides our health problem, this workshop plan has met obstacles from the moment it came out as words. I've given my best opinion based on my observation of Jakartans and Indonesians in general to correlate to the idea. They are the biggest obstacle and the second is the incoming workshop instructor. He may a great music educator and composer but no one here knows about him and that would not compel people to come. To make matter worse, there's no single tag line about him that we could use for the promotion.

Since my words fell on deaf ears and our partner insisted to move on, all we got so far only problem after problem, headache after headache.

My wife and I will wait until this workshop over and afterwards, we just want to fly and do our postponed dreams.

Dengue fever ordeal Pt II

Well, I promised to tell the rest of the story right? But after I thought about it, it's just too bitter for me to remember.

Two days after I got admitted, my wife was allowed to go home. My older sister also admitted to hospital on the same day as I was and the bed next to mine was then taken by my sister. We stayed in that room from Sunday and by Friday morning on May 30, we've been told that we can go home because our thrombocyte level have climbed. The info was right, for my sister but I got my blood taken again since my lab result was inconclusive.
By noon, the lab result concluded that my thrombocyte level still dropping and I couldn't leave hospital.

I was so angry and having nosebleed in the process. The thing with dengue fever is that you need to remain calm, but I was so angry, so upset that I kept on moving to express my emotions. It took me sometime to get a grip on myself.

On Saturday and Sunday, I felt that I'm strong enough to walk to the bathroom but the nurses weren't share my opinion and gave me strict order to stay in bed, reasoned that if I move to much I''ll be having a shock and could be fatal. I don't know if it was a paranoia of dealing with dengue fever, but I don't think that helped me a lot.

By Monday, June 2, my thrombocyte jumped up to 160.000 and I quickly asked my infuse to be removed. I went home that day and I felt aches in all over my body because I haven't used my muscles for 9 days!!!

My drumming is becoming very very poor, my hands and feet still felt numb, my coordination is messy...oh Lord, so many things I got to do to return my playing state to normal. Thanks to 9 days of hospitalization!

Seriously people, don't ever catch a dengue fever, it's not good at all!!!

Dengue fever ordeal Pt I

So,

As I promised, I'll share my experience of these couple of weeks. Sorry for the lack of pictures or videos, I really want to add them so everyone could see what I'm talking about, but I still haven't got my own camera or cam video. Without further intro, here is my story....

The last two weeks were hard for my wife and I; she was having high fever for two days and on the third day I’ve waited long enough and quickly took her to hospital. She was then diagnosed with blood dengue and straightaway admitted for treatment in hospital. She was hospitalized at Hospital Cinere.

I’m so deeply sad, but I didn’t let my wife see me sad or else she would become sad too and won’t recover quickly.
My wife was admitted to a 1st class, which has two beds for two patients. When we arrived, there was already another patient that from my observation is an old woman of a pretty wealthy family. Wealthy but still bound to the conservative mindset of a family, where image is much more important than fact…ah, what ever, most Indonesian people who consider themselves wealthy are actually trapped in “village” syndrome. “Village” syndrome is, “You can take a boy (person) out of the village, but you can’t never take the village out of the boy (person).”

On the first night in hospital, my wife and I received the first shocking moment. A nurse came and asked me, as the husband, if I agree with the medicine proposed for my wife. It was an antibiotic and the price really shocked me, it was 194.000 rupiah/gram (about US$ 21) and the dose needed for my wife is 2 grams/day, it means we’ll spend about 400.000 rupiah/day (about US$ 43). The dose will be given for 5 days and that will be 2.000.000 rupiah (US$ 217) in total just for the antibiotic.

At first I felt helpless. I don’t really care about the numbers if I’m paid in US$ or other strong currencies, but we are still living in Indonesia, where the capital income is low. We quickly called our uncle, who is renown, doctor in Malang and we found that there’s generic medicine, equal in quality as of the patented medicine, available. I ferociously countered the doctor, expressed my disagreement and asked about the generic antibiotics. Without further delay, the doctor gave us the generic antibiotic that cost only 15.000 rupiah/gram! So what the heck was that ripped off antibiotics???
As soon as the generic antibiotic administered to my wife, the effect soon visible and felt, so my uncle’s words are true, the generic medicine is as good as the patented ones.

On the second day, the old lady next to my wife was allowed to leave hospital and there were nothing really happened, except that my wife’s thrombocytes level drops to 53.000 where the normal level is above 200.000. It was a normal stage in blood dengue. Around 7 pm, a lady is placed on the bed next to my wife’s. She seemed pretty ill. My brother came and brought a bed cover and a thick blanket for my sleeping needs, since the air conditioner in the room is awfully cold! Make sense? I don’t know…

The third day, I abruptly awaken around 5.30 am by the nurse who came to take blood of my wife. I stayed awake then and checked on my wife, her body temperature climbed again to 38 degrees C and had mild headache. No need to wait for the blood test result, I knew her thrombocytes level has dropped again. Three hours later the doctor came and confirmed my suspicion, the thrombocytes level dropped to 45.000.
The doctor then gave strict order to my wife to stay in bed and only got to bathroom for solid secretion.
I went home for a bath, checking emails and buying apples for my wife. I got back to the hospital around 11 pm and after rearranging the stuff around my wife’s bed and set the alarm to 5.15 am, I went straight to sleep.

The fourth day, I was again abruptly awakened but not intentionally so. A nurse came very early to check on my wife’s blood pressure and body temperature. Although she tried came quietly, my ears and sense still could detect sudden her presence and when you’re in hospital waiting for your loved ones, your senses will become ultra sensitive!
It was 4.30 am! I was thinking something had happened, since the nurse came an hour earlier.
“Oh you’re awake, I thought I was quiet enough” The nurse commented when I woke up.
“Clearly you’re not.” I said back, a bit annoyed but I knew she was just doing her job and thank God she did!
One hour later the activities started, collecting blood sample, washing my wife, administers medicines, delivering breakfast and so on. I took refuge to my car since I’m still sleepy.
Around 7 am, I feel like having chicken porridge as breakfast and I found one just before the hospital main entrance. The writings on the chart was “Bubur Ayam Cirebon”, means Cirebon chicken porridge. Cirebon is a city 4 hours from Jakarta. I didn’t really want a specific porridge and looked around the area for a common chicken porridge. I couldn’t find any and I returned to the porridge chart at the hospital entrance.
After I finished off my porridge, I had a little chat with the porridge guy. I asked whether he came from Cirebon and he told me that he’s from Kuningan, another city 4 hours drive from Cirebon to the south. Funny eh? Just like an Indian guy selling an authentic Italian Pizza in New York!
I then returned to my wife’s room and tidied up several more stuff, the doctor came at 9.15 am and informed us that the thrombocytes level dropped again to 37.000. But as long as she remain calm, she’ll be fine.
Around noon, I checked on the recording project that was being mixed by my friend and found out that I made mistakes on the audios files, wasn’t really serious but they’ll have to wait until I’m free to bounce the audio files again, which is when my wife recovers. But after I rethinking about it, I decided to return home, working on the files and delivered them to my friend’s place. I didn’t return to hospital to take rest at home.

The fifth day, I woke up pretty late and my wife was calling from hospital, waiting for me. I quickly rushed to hospital and drove madly since I was worried about her. As I approached the hospital, my wife called me again and told that her thrombocytes have started to climb. I arrived a moment later and as usual accompanied my wife in the room.
There was nothing unusual that day, except that I felt more tired than ever. Around 3 that day, my body temperature suddenly climbed to 38 degrees C. I knew something was wrong and quickly went to my car to take a nap. Not long afterwards, my dad, sister and brother came to see my wife, so I returned to the room and asked if we can drive along, since my head was already spinning.
We returned home that evening and as I got home, I took flu medicine and went to bed straightaway. I took the medicine again around night and early morning, but to no avail.

The sixth day my wife in hospital, I myself got a high fever and that morning I took a cab to the hospital where my wife was admitted. The nurse quickly took me to the emergency and took my blood for a lab check. My mom came along later to help me in case I got hospitalized.
At around 10 am, the lab test read that I also got contracted by dengue fever and will need to be admitted for treatment. And so there was, I got hospitalized too and placed in the same room with my wife. It was the beginning of my 9 days ordeal in that room.

That's the first part of the story...I'll continue the story by this weekend...

My current situation

I also posted this news at my friendster...

My wife, Niken, is currently hospitalized at Hospital Cinere, Melati room 516 for dengue fever. She was admitted three days ago and right now her thrombocytes are continuously drops. It will be several more days until her thrombocytes to return to normal.

I’ll be staying with her until she recovers and allowed to return home. I also won’t be online for two weeks. Please pray for us!

Thank you and God bless you all!

PS: I'm writing all of our experiences during our stay in hospital. I'll post them later when we got back!

F@#k Up Education in Indonesia

Oops, almost forgot that now I have a blog in my hand…

Anyways, last week the whole family gathered at my parents place to celebrate my niece 11th birthday. As usual as the family gathers, we had all sort of topics flying around the conversation, from what music project I recently work on to the talk about education in Indonesia.
I found the education topic very much interesting because we all experiencing the horror of the latest Indonesian education. Not directly but through our children (I don’t have a child yet but I think of my nieces and nephews as my children as well).

The picture of the putrid of Indonesian education can be seen from the primary levels. My niece and nephews are in their elementary levels and from what I heard and saw I could tell that in the next 10 years, Indonesia will harbor a massive increase of psychopaths.

I believe as well as Einstein does that imagination is the most important thing before knowledge. It is proven by our modern life. So the primary levels of education should encourage younglings to build and explore their imagination and creativity that will make them easier to learn other things, such as math, science, etc.
But this is not happening in Indonesia; the elementary schools (and sadly the parents too) always regard high grade and having brain for numbers or science are the ultimate goal and they think that all the children are GENIUSES WITH MATH!!! That is very absurd! Once in a while an Indonesian kid won the Physic Olympic or Math Olympic, well good for them, but we can’t generalize it to other kids. This is also what’s happening in private schools. They forced second grade students to swallow subjects of higher grade, THAT’S INSANE!!!

Not to mention some people who saw the business opportunity from the chaos. They are competing to open a “Bimbingan Belajar”. It’s a place for students to get learning guidance, some sort of private instruction. BUT, business comes first and what supposed to be a private instruction, they wickedly made it into a class and put the students, sometime up to 45 to 50, packed together. Their evil does not stop there, instead of helping the students to understand the subjects, they just giving the shortcut to solve the equation and hints of how working on a massive national exam. My God, that’s so evil! One “Bimbingan Belajar” puts a sign, “Program Super Intensif”, that means they have a super intensive learning guidance program. What on earth is that? The word intensive alone has already explained the situation and now they said super intensive? Of what? Shortcuts? Hints and tips? Without imagination and creativity the kids will become either zombies or monsters. Now that how wicked is the education system in Indonesia.

Also I heard that we are celebrating 100 years of “Kebangkitan Nasional”, the national uprise…well tell me, have we risen yet or have we fallen into a deeper coma…

I'm still in Jakarta...thinking....

Well,

After some years being a reader of all the blogs from around the internet, now I decided to make one of my own...

As you may or may not know, I'm a musician and I have a prog band, Academie of FarSide. The latter has caused me headache, stress and frustration for like a year now!

How would you feel if you're leading a team on a great task and no one but you is working to achieve the target? That exactly what is happening to my band now. I was trying to dissolve the band but seems my band mates were frightened if they lost it. So now I just let them do what they want to do, I'm tired of baby sitting and I need to move forward, for I have big dreams and big plans ahead! That's not the worst thing happening in my life now.

I don't know if this is a side effect from the above mentioned problem, but since 2007 until now I couldn't compose new music and this year even got bad, I've lost my conception and understanding of what is music. In simple words, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS MUSIC ANYMORE!!!

I'm working to get myself back to top, it's not easy but I will make it done!

Also, I'd like to thank you for the people behind Shaun the Sheep. Thank you so much for bringing an exceptional and hilarious show!
I was on the verge of losing my mind and the show has helped and gave me extra strength to hold on. Thanks guys!
